Wood Engraving Workshop

I am all for learning new skills or polishing old ones!

So going along to workshops and being part of groups is a great way to get involved in a particular community; hone what you know; learn something new and discover things about yourself which may not have thought obvious!

I was fortunate enough to attend a wood engraving workshop by esteemed printmaker and artist David Frazer at his studio in Castlemaine. Amazing is an understatement! Many of his works are on really small pieces of wood and the detail is crazy!

We were all welcomed into his cozy studio ( notice the log fire burning!) and he generously shared his knowledge, printing space and equipment with us. We started with a test piece – funnily enough my original idea kept changing as I practiced with the different engraving tools and had to keep adjusting for some wayward mark making!

However, as the day went on I realized I did possess some patience and managed to produce another piece with less ‘unintended’ marks or maybe I was getting better at ‘hiding’ them? Ha!

And after a demonstration on his beautiful Columbia Press, we each were able to ink up and print our own blocks on it – just magic! It was such a great way to spend the day and meeting so many lovely like-minded people. I am still so excited and still processing what I’ve learnt but it has certainly made me more determined to get more detail into my work!
